Porsche Supercup Win - Spa Francorchamps
Rain Master Edwards Wins at Spa Francorchamps in Porsche Supercup
Lining up 5th on the grid from a fantastic qualifying session, Sean Edwards went on to dominate the race and win round 11 of the Porsche Supercup race in tricky conditions.
The weather had been mixed all weekend for all those competing at Spa Francorchamps during the F1 weekend. Due to the length of the lap at Spa - the longest on the calendar, Konrad elected to use the time wisely after the 2nd quick qualifying lap which gave Sean provisional pole and switch to a set of wets to lightly scrub in case of wet weather for Sundays Porsche Supercup race.
Four drivers then went faster to push Sean down to 5th for the start of Sundays race; however the canny Konrad team had used there slick tyres less than those in front which are required to be carried over to Sundays race, plus the advantage of a set of scrubbed wets in the bank.
For Sunday's race the teams felt the rain was coming yet the track was mostly dry enough enough to start on slicks, advantage Sean Edwards. An electric start propelled Edwards to third position by the end of the first lap as the leaders made mistakes into Les Combes which Sean then held for several laps. From the old bus stop area through the La Source has been redeveloped from the Spa of old and the newer tarmac surface dries far slower than the rest of the circuit meaning any water here and it would stay wet for the remainder of the race.
On lap 5 the rain began to fall and Edwards reeled in second and first places, passing them both to then win the race by a comfortable margin of two seconds - which is a comfortable margin in the highly competitive Porsche Supercup!
Oakley Design wishes to congratulate its test and development driver Sean Edwards and the whole Konrad team on this magnificent victory!
